"Tell the chef, the beer is on me."
~~What do we know … of the world and the universe about us? Our means of receiving impressions are absurdly few, and our notions of surrounding objects infinitely narrow. We see things only as we are constructed to see them, and can gain no idea of their absolute nature. With five feeble senses we pretend to comprehend the boundlessly complex cosmos, yet other beings with wider, stronger, or different range of senses might not only see very differently the things we see, but might see and study whole worlds of matter, energy, and life which lie close at hand yet can never be detected with the senses we have. - H.P. Lovecraft, “From Beyond”~~
I wrote a thread around 2009 regarding the Mythos, which unfortunately was completely eaten by the Great Apeci event later that year. I'm going to try to recreate my thread, because I thought it was an interesting thought pattern.
There are several “gods” in the Mythos pantheon (Which I've changed from Lovecraft Pantheon, due to the fact a lot of the GOO*'s and EG*'s are more elaborated on by other authors in his “circle”, re: Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, etc.). They're only really considered gods from humanity's point of view, truly they're just basically extraterrestrials. In 2009, I realized that if there were truly a “god”, or “gods”, he/she/they would probably behave more like the beings related in Lovecraft's stories, and the whole Mythos in general. Cold and unfeeling, much more ancient than our solar system, old as the big bang even. They notice us, but barely.
The only being/deity in the Mythos that likes to mingle and fuck with humanity is Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos. Nyarlathotep takes many shapes, from a black, cloven footed man (the Black Man in witch covens http://www.angelfire.com/mi4/polcrt/SalemTrials.html ), to a bat with tri-lobed eyes. It is claimed he has a thousand “faces”. He is the trickster in many mythologies; Raven, Loki, Coyote, Pan, and even Christianity's own Satan, to name a few. This being does the will of the other deities/beings (a messenger of sorts), but in the Mythos he is related to Azathoth, the blind idiot god, who rules “at the center of ultimate chaos”, and thus submits to his brother's will first and foremost. Strangely enough, Nyarlathotep is associated with Mercury in some circles, as are several important/linked Mythological deities: Hermes (Greek, messenger), Nabu (Babylonian, Supreme Messenger Herald of the Gods, also the son of Marduk~see below~), Hoenir (Norse, Messenger of the Aesir). Ironically enough, the Gemini's (Twins) ruling planet is Mercury as well.
Azathoth. This being, thing, has a few names; Nuclear Chaos, Daemon Sultan, and as referenced above: The Blind Idiot God. Associated with the Sun (nuclear fusion, hence Nuclear Chaos), Azathoth is basically the end-all. Blind and stupid, playing his flute which creates and destroys worlds, Azathoth usually has no other job. He works with mathematics and balance, unaware to our or anything's existence, only piping away mindlessly, keeping the “universe” in a cycle of destruction and birth. Other deities in Earth's mythologies associated with the Sun/Azathoth: Yhi (Aus. Aboriginal goddess), Teoyaomicqui (Aztec god of lost souls, sun and sixth hour of the day), Ra/Atum (Egyptian).
Yog-Sothoth. The Key and the Gate. Opener of the Way. The Lurker at the Threshold. Described as a group of glowing spheres, Yog-Sothoth is associated with Time and Space, and can open doorways to other dimensions (if the stars are right, of course). If given proper tribute, YS has been known to impart wisdom (considered generally not a good idea, as too much knowledge can court disaster). Yog-Sothoth is associated with Jupiter in some cases, much like Minerva (a Roman goddess associated with wisdom), and Marduk (Babylonian – Guardian of the Four Quarters, Shepherd of the Stars, Master of Magick).
Dagon & Hydra. It's debateable whether or not Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are proper “deities”, some people consider the two as just very large and ancient Deep Ones. Dagon has a true basis in Earth's mythology. An Assyro-Babylonian/Philistine aquatic fish-god. According to Biblical sources, Dagon's shrine was destroyed by the Ark of the Covenant. He is known, occasionally, as Leviathan or the Kraken. Dagon is associated with Luna, our Moon. Others include: Shiva (Hindu), Arianrhod (Welsh/Celt goddess).
Hastur. The Unspeakable One. Him Who is Not to Be Named. Assatur. Kaiwan. A being “confined” to the distant star Aldebaran. Described by Derleth as "A titanic aquatic being, tentacled. Octopoid, but far, far larger—ten—twenty times larger than the giant Octopus apallyon of the west coast. What was its neck alone easily fifteen rods in diameter." Hastur is linked with the Lake of Hali and the Yellow Sign, Carcosa, and the Yellow King. Many cults exist on earth in worship of Hastur. (http://www.netherreal.de/library/lex_entry/h1.htm). Not much else is known about this being, nor of his associations. Supposedly the half-brother of the dreaming Cthulhu.
Cthulhu. The most popular “god” in the Mythos, Cthulhu is described as, “a vaguely anthropoid outline, but with and octopus-like head whose face was a a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. He is of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and his cephalopod head is covered with facial feelers.” Some have said to imagine Cthulhu, one must imagine a squid, a dragon and a man together in one body (http://www.netherreal.de/library/lex_entry/c1.htm). He sleeps under the sea in his sunken city of R'yleh, awaiting the stars to “come right”, and his city to rise then, with the aid of his fanatical followers (Cthulhu cultists). There's more that can be said of Cthulhu, but I'm keeping this post as nondescript as I possibly can. Cthulhu is associated with Mars, like other violent mythological gods; Ares (Greek, god of War), Teutates (Celtic/Gaul, God of fertility, war, and wealth. His name means "the god of the tribe". Human sacrifices were made to him (typically drowned in great cauldrons). (http://www.companionsoftheglyph.org/diesTPLm.htm), and Agni (Hindu, Devourer, The Sacrificer)
Shub-Niggurath. Black goat of the woods with a thousand young. “God/ess” associated with fertility and the planet Venus. Not much is known about “her”, SN is known as both male and female, depending where you read. The one GOO* who hasn't really been seen. Donald Tyson's Necronomicon: The Wanderings of Alhazred links Shub-Niggurath with the biblical Lilith, calling them one and the same. Several goddesses are associated with Venus as well, although not nearly as horrifying: Aphrodite (Greek- Amorous one), Ishtar (Babylonian – Giver of Life), and Freya (Norse – Warrior goddess also associated with fertility and life).
Yig. Father of Serpents. Appears as either a Serpent-man, a serpent with bat-like wings, or a giant snake. Identified with the Mesoamerican Quetzalcoatl. This being is found more in Robert E. Howard's Conan tales, but has been seen in the Cthulhu mythos on rare occasions. On an interesting “Conspiracy” note, the infamous Reptilians (re: Icke, LOL) are supposedly the offspring of Yig and Set (ha). Yig is linked to the planet Saturn, like Chronos/Kronos (Greek, his chariot is drawn by winged serpents even!), Kali (Hindu), and Ptah (Egyptian).
There are various other EG's and GOO's in the Mythos, but these are the “Main”/well known beings. There is more to say, but I seem to have misplaced my documents and will discuss Chaos magic using the Mythos deities at a later date.
~~I have looked upon all that the universe has to hold of horror, and even the skies of spring and the flowers of summer must ever afterward be poison to me. But I do not think my life will be long. As my uncle went, as poor Johansen went, so I shall go. I know too much, and the cult still lives. - H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu”~~
